Marsh Street Poolstock

Started by: jjblue32 (7)

Researching my family history and my Great Grandparents lived in Marsh Street which was next to the Tippings Pub off Poolstock Lane. They had the surname Meadows and eventually moved a few hundred yards into Brighton Terrace, the houses opposite Tesco. I am trying to find out when the houses in Marsh Street were knocked down and if any photos exist. Any ideas? Thank you

No it was definitely Marsh Street and yes it was in Worsley Mesnes next to the railway line now the new bypass. I have a map showing it from the history shop in the late 19th century. Thanks

Thank you. Any thoughts on when the houses would have been demolished?

The houses were demolished in the early sixties I knew Frank Smout from Marsh Street. Frank joined the police force and became a detective superintendent in Wigan CID.

You can gain some information from the photos in the Poolstock Lane page in Album LINK

In this picture, in the background you can see a red bricked Methodist Church, set back off Poolstock Lane.

From the maps, Marsh Street ran along the side of it, and it only had houses on one side, the Methodist Church being on the other side of Marsh Street LINK

There were only 15 houses on one side of Marsh Street.

Yes, and it makes me wonder how they decided which houses on Poolstock Lane, and which Streets to demolish, because they left the Tippings Pub, and the houses across the road up, so I cannot see it having anything to do with Mining Subsidence.

Information from the 1939 register.
3 of the houses had widows as head. 10 of the houses had coal miners as head. I was headed by a disabled ex serviceman and one by a worker in engineering.
